ON THE RUN – MARCH 2022

RUNNING NEWS – WOMEN’S EDITION

It’s been an incredible season or two for breaking American women’s running records, so during this Women’s History Month it seemed only fitting to highlight these amazing athletes.

  • 100 miles – Camille Herron broke her own world record and beat the #1 man by almost 30 minutes by finishing in 12:41:11 @ USA Track and Field 100-mile Championships (2/20/22). Along the way she also broke the 50-mile world record in that age group with a time of 6:08:24.

  • 50K – Des Linden, 2018 Boston Marathon winner, used the season of cancelled races to up her game and mileage. She set a world record of 2:59:54 on a bike path in Oregon (4/13/21), over 7 minutes faster than the previous record.

  • Marathon – Keira D’Amato shaved off 24 seconds from Deena Kastor’s long-standing American record to break the tape in 2:19:12 @ Houston (1/16/22). Even more impressive is how far she’s come in such a short amount of time. She ran the 2017 Shamrock Marathon in Virginia Beach, hoping to break three hours, and clocked 3:14:54 in sleet, wind and hail.

  • Half Marathon – Sarah Hall crossed the line in 1:07:15 @ Houston (1/16/22). An American record to call her own.

  • 5K – Betty Lindberg, 97, finished in 55:48 @ USA Track & Field Masters 5K championships (2/26/22). She took up running when she was 63. A mere 34 years later she has a World age-group record.

Speaking of history, the women’s 100m record, 10.49, is still held by Florence Griffith-Joyner, set in 1988. You can bask in her glory and make a water stop while running around the lake at the Mission Viejo park named in her honor (corner of Olympiad – duh – and Alicia).
